We’re delighted to welcome Prof. Flavia Cavaliere of the Università di Napoli—Federico II to the Department of French & Italian during the spring 2022 term. Prof. Cavaliere, a scholar of translation in the cultural spaces between Italy and the US, will teach a “Representing Italy in English-language Media” version of ITAL 1078: Fulbright Seminar in Italian Studies, on TTh at 2:30pm. This course introduces five interrelated thematic modules – Italy overseas; Translating Italy; The ‘Italy and the mafia’ equation: setting the stereotype straight; Negotiating Italianness; Enacting Italy – as different examples of (mis)representations of Italian identity in English-language media environments. Students in this course will examine the complexity of Italianness and how its multifaceted identity is re-shaped by and through various media and specifically via the medium of English. This course has no prerequisites and does not require any previous knowledge of Italian language. This course counts toward the Italian majors and Italian minor.
