FRIT faculty are currently inviting undergraduates interested in doing research or teaching under the mentorship of a faculty member in the following areas for spring term 2022 [and beyond]:
Prof. Lina Insana is accepting applicants to join an ongoing project on the origins of the Christopher Columbus memorial in Pittsburgh. Students will assist in organizing, curating, and captioning archival documents gathered from Italian- and English-language newspapers published in Pittsburgh from 1909 until 1950. As some documents contain parade route information relating to Columbus Day commemorations, students with GIS capabilities are particularly welcome to apply. Depending on the availability and conditions of access, students may also be asked to conduct new research in the ULS archives of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, as well as in newspaper archives in the Pittsburgh community only recently brought to light. Applicants do not need to study or read Italian, but students of Italian will have the opportunity to work with Italian-language materials. Accepted students may register for either 1 or 2 cr. of ITAL 1909, depending on their preferred weekly time commitment. Interested students should write to Prof. Lina Insana (insana@pitt.edu) to express their interest in the project and in research in general.
