Gamma Kappa Alpha
In 1995 a Chapter of Gamma Kappa Alpha National Italian Honor Society was established at the University of Pittsburgh. Gamma Kappa Alpha is a society formed to acknowledge superior scholastic performance in the field of Italian language, literature and culture, and is open to membership at institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada.
At present GKA numbers more than 90 affiliates; among these are: Brown University, Harvard University, Indiana University, Loyola University of Chicago, Middlebury College, Ohio State University, Princeton University, Queens College, Temple University, the University of Virginia and Yale University.
The society encourages college students to acquire a greater interest in, and a deeper understanding of Italian culture, art and history. The organization also recognizes outstanding undergraduate scholarship in the field of Italian by awarding annually the GKA award.
Membership
Any senior or junior who has taken at least five Italian courses beyond the elementary-level language courses, has attained at least a B average in Italian, and is in the upper 35 per cent of his/her class, may be elected to membership.
Every spring term the Chapter Academic Advisor, Professor Francesca Savoia, identifies all Pitt students who qualify for membership in GKA. Once eligibility has been verified, Professor Savoia sends a request for GKA membership certificates to the society’s secretary. An induction ceremony is held at the end of the spring semester.
